We are very sorry to not have followed up with more details about the party. We needed to give first priority to our members to attend the party and so many of them signed up that we ran out of space. We will likely look for a larger venue next year as we certainly would like as many people as possible to have the opportunity to attend the party. We encourage you to become member of the House of Denmark so you can be kept up to date as it happens. To become a member, please see the link on our webpage.
The next event will be Fastelavn in February. There will be no space limitations. This is not just for children. Everyone, no matter your age, enjoys a Fastelavns bolle and hygge.
Join us on the beach for a picnic, hygge, snobrød and songs and to see the witch fly off to Bloksbjerg Saturday, June 23rd, at 6:00 p.m. at East Mission Bay. House of Denmark will be bringing hot dogs and medister. Please bring your own side dishes, dessert, and utensils.
We will be sending out our “scouts” early in the morning to secure a fire pit near East Mission Bay Drive south of the Mission Bay Park Visitor Information Center and north of the Hilton. To find us, exit I5 at Clairemont Drive/Mission Bay Drive, then go west towards the bay, turn left at the stop sign and follow signs to Playa Pacifica Park (see highlighted area on map). You can look for a red awning with the House of Denmark name which will be put up near the bonfire place. Also, feel free to call me at 858-254-6295 if you still have trouble finding us.
Bring a blanket or beach chairs and a picnic dinner. We will have access to a couple of picnic tables with benches. We need a few people to make the dough and bring sticks for snobrød (s’mores are also welcome). Feel free to come early and enjoy the afternoon or the day on the beach. We’ll have plenty of firewood.
Remember to bring something warm to wear when it cools down, and don’t forget your sunscreen.
Our Lawn Program is back to its traditional date – the weekend closest to Grundlovsdag (Constitution Day), although on a Saturday rather than a Sunday so that we can avoid the Rock ‘n Roll Marathon. We have some exciting things planned:
Reenactment group The Guardians of Midgard will be setting up their Viking Village on the lawn and there likely will be some Viking battles and mayhem happening.
The San Diego Lego Users Group (Sandlug) will set up some of their amazing Lego creations.
At 2 p.m. our stage program will start including a performance by world-renowned storyteller Randel McGee portraying Hans Christian Andersen – he will entertain by telling stories while making paperclips. Local jazz band Hot Buttered Biscuit will entertain with music.
And you don’t want to miss the food that will be for sale, including frikadeller (meatballs), medisterpølse (sausage), rødkål (red cabbage), potato salad, and pølser (hotdogs) with remoulade and crispy onions. There will be Kringle and other delicious goodies.
Please contact Oda Audish at (858) 254-6295 or at email@example.com if you are able to help out with putting on such a “spread”.
House of Denmark joins with the other Houses in the International Village to share traditional dishes and entertainment. We’ll be making and selling Æbleskiver. Although the event is on a smaller scale than December, we still need volunteers to help with baking, serving, and selling the æbleskiver, so please come to the park and give us a hand for a couple of hours. If you are able to help out, please contact Oda Audish at
(858) 254-6295 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
It is also an opportunity to try some delicious food from one of the Houses that you may not have tried before.

We celebrate the Danish tradition of Fastelavn (carnival) Saturday, February 10th, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the House of Denmark Cottage and on the Lawn.
We are looking forward to seeing the children in their costumes – and adults, too. The children will be invited to beat a barrel with a bat (‘slå katten af tønden’) to make the goodies inside fall out. There will be a chance for everybody to make ‘fastelavnsris’ (a traditional craft for the season), and to share ‘fastelavnsboller’ (lenten buns). If you would like to bake for us, please let us know.
Please bring your own twigs for the ‘fastelavnsris’!
Participation is free to members of the House of Denmark. Guests (children as well as adults) may join the fun for $5.00 per person.
We are kicking off the holiday season by offering some Danish Christmas treats along with an opportunity to make traditional paper hearts, origami stars, and other holiday decorations in time to display them in December.
The Cottage will be filled with “julehygge”, and we will provide all the colorful paper, star strips, and other supplies needed to create Danish Christmas ornaments.
Please join us for crafting, gløg, æbleskiver, and more Saturday, November 19th 2:30-4:30 pm at the House of Denmark.
Danish church service, ministered by Pastor Anne-Grethe Krogh Nielsen from the The Danish Lutheran Church in Yorba Linda, followed by our annual juletræsfest (Christmas party) where we enjoy a traditional Danish holiday dinner, get a chance to win a prize for finding the almond in the dessert, sing, and dance around the tree. Maybe julemanden (Santa) will visit? Feel free to attend one event or both.
